Maximizing your Guided Fishing Experience
Securing a skilled professional guide can be a very wise investment for someone serious about any outdoor sport. But, like all investments, there is a degree of responsibility that lies in your hands if you hope for your outing to be a success. As a fly-fishing guide who operates over one hundred trips annually, I have witnessed what can happen to a trip when guests show up unprepared. Hopefully, this article will shed some light on, what I'm sure, most pro guides will tell you are the responsibilities of the angler. MORE.... |

Fall Crappie Fishing on Weiss Lake
and where to get-em
This time of year a lot outdoorsmen are gearing up for the upcoming hunting season hoping to bag that big buck that visits them in their dreams every night. This is also the time when crappie anglers get real itchy to set the hook and bring back memories from this past years spring crappie season. This is one of my favorite times of year to be on Weiss -when the heat and humidity from the dog days of summer are gone and when foggy mornings and fall foliage signals that transition time has arrived. CURRENT FISHING
Salmon Fishing in the Port Alberni Inlet is picking up. Fishing in the Bells Bay and Underwood area has been good. The Harbor has also had some days of good fishing. The Barkley Sound surfline and most areas outside of Ucluelet have continued to be hot with some surprisingly calm water over the past week. The next three to four weeks should see some very hot fishing with some big chinook and lots of coho. MORE... |

Current Fishing
The summer trend of migrating salmon swimming along the Vancouver Island shoreline has seemed to change. The various banks all the way out to the Big Bank seem to have a higher concentration of salmon.
Inside water fishing locations near Ucluelet such as Mara Rock, The Lighthouse, and Beg Island do not have as many Coho and Chinook as there was only a week ago. The salmon in the area just outside the Ucluelet Harbor are not as numerous but there have been some very large fish. The surfline of Barkley Sound is feeling the same effect. Austin Island, Meares Bluff, Swale Rock, Edward King and Cape Beale are not as productive as they were only a week ago. However these areas will begin to pick up as returning fish into various Barkley Sound spawning grounds and the return of the Port Alberni Robertson Creek fish, will flood into many of the Sounds'most favored fishing areas. CURRENT FISHING
Salmon Fishing out of Ucluelet and Barkley Sound is very good. Sport Anglers and guides have been successful most days. The salmon are currently in areas close to the beach on the West Coast. Barkley Sound has seen many of the more popular fishing areas continue to be very good. June has been a fantastic fishing month to date. We are expecting the trend to continue as most of the salmon coming down the west coast of Vancouver Island are located in inside waters. This really looks like one of our best salmon fishing years. The Barkley Sound area will be rather remarkable this summer in relation to size of fish. Fisheries Canada has forecast most of the returning chinook to be 4, 5, and 6 year olds. The chinook will range 20 plus pound to just over 40 pounds on average. We are very excited about this, plus the fact that there will be a healthy return of coho mixed in with the chinook later in August. MORE.... |

We are still a few months away from any fishing in the Port Alberni Inlet. Port Alberni Located on Vancouver Island has been known as THE SALMON CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. The Port Alberni Inlet has large returns of sockeye, chinook, coho, and chum, which swim its waters during the summer and early fall fishing season. These salmon enter Barkley Sound and make their way into the inlet, the Port Alberni Harbor and finally into the Somass-Stamp River system where they travel to their natural spawning grounds. Many of the chinook and coho spawn at the Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery. MORE.... |

The summer of 2007 is coming closer and all sport saltwater fishermen are becoming increasingly excited about the prospects of summer salmon fishing opportunities. Vancouver Island British Columbia is known world wide for the fabulous salmon sport fishing it offers. The scenic west coast of Vancouver Island from Victoria to Winter Harbor has many bays and inlets waiting in anticipation of salmon that are either returning to a nearby river or creek or migrating to another area but have stopped to rest and feed on some of the rich bait stocks before continuing on their final journey. The West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia has much to offer. The West Coast is a beautiful area of the world with its rugged but scenic coastline outlined by snowcapped mountains in the background. Ucluelet and Tofino both found on Vancouver Islands coast are located south of Clayoquot Sound, which is full of beaches, islands and rainforests. The Pacific Rim National Park ( Long Beach) is located in the area and has grown into a very popular tourist destination with oceanfront resorts, hotels, motels, lodges, campgrounds, quaint cafes and restaurants and even art galleries. The Pacific Rim National Park is a paradise for surfers and beachcombers. There are large rolling waves and miles of pristine beaches. MORE.... |

Salmon fishing in the Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, British Columbia area is fantastic. Anglers world-wide visit the area not only to sport fish but also take in much of the breath-taking scenery. One might ask “why do people come from other places to fish in the waters of this area”. Simply, Port Alberni provides easy access to all of the hot fishing spots in the area. The Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound provide almost 30 miles of calm protected water making it very accessible for sport fishermen, sport charters and guides to fish. MORE... |

There are few areas in British Columbia that are like Vancouver Island for saltwater fishing accessibility. Vancouver Island has world -class fishing opportunities that are filled with excitement for the recreational sportsman. Vancouver Island has tremendous appeal to many visitors. For the avid fisherman fighting a big chinook or watching and holding onto a 15 to 20 pound bright silver coho jumping across the water in summersault fashion behind the boat is an exhilarating experience. Some people just enjoy the experience of some breathtaking scenery seen in many of the natural inlets and beaches of Vancouver Island..MORE.... |

January is now more than half over and the spring-summer-fall salt-water sport fishing season is coming closer. Most charter-guide and fishing lodge operations in B.C. are organizing for what looks like a pretty good year of sport fishing on the west coast of British Columbia. It is the winter season and fishing in the area is as expected. Ucluelet has been difficult to fish as the wind has really been a problem. Barkley Sound has had some fishable days and has had some production on Winter Springs (black mouth chinook). The Somass-Stamp River system has been very good although the very high water last week slowed things down for some anglers. The Port Alberni Inlet is very quiet with no fishing. MORE.... |

Guiding on the Famous Kenai River Alaska
I first fished on the Kenai River in 1979 and began working as a fishing guide on the beautiful Kenai in 1981. To me guiding is not just taking people out on the river to kill fish; it is an opportunity to share the river and Alaska with people from around the world. I am on the river many days each year but I do not take my familiarity with the river and the fishery for granted, it is an amazing river and my goal for each fishing trip is to give my clients an enjoyable, good day of pursuing salmon and trout. I try to keep in mind that for many people their fishing trip may be the only opportunity they will have to visit Alaska and hopefully catch a trophy fish. What I want to share in this brief story are many of the things or experiences I have seen or experienced in my years as a Kenai guide. MORE.... |

Holiday Wishes from Slivers Charters
We at Slivers Charters Salmon Sport fishing are preparing for the 2007 season. We are fishing not only Barkley Sound and the Port Alberni Inlet but also Ucluelet and the Somass-Stamp River. Steelhead fishing in the river is very good in fact it is phenomenal. Winter steelhead fishing is always good but this is the best year we have had in the last five. Guides have had an average of 9 to 12 fish with the best days up to 17. High water has not played havoc as there are plenty of hatchery and wild fish in the system and they seem not difficult to find. Most of our guided trips are by jet boat. MORE.... |

FISHING REPORT SOMASS-STAMP RIVER, WEST COAST (UCLUELET) PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARCLAY SOUND
December 18th, 2006
The Port Alberni and West Coast (Ucluelet) areas have had some spectacular Winter Storms. Not only have there been some unbelievable windy days in Port Alberni where winds in the area were up to 90 knots and up to 135 knots in areas of Barclay sound but the central and west coast areas of Vancouver Island have also had some heavy snow days. The winter storms have made for a lack of fishing days on the ocean but have not played havoc with angling in the Somass-Stamp River. Steelhead fishing in the river and various tributaries has been excellent and will only get better. The winter steelhead in the Somass-Stamp are in large numbers with anglers in jet boats doing very well. MORE.....

December REPORT: PORT ALBERNI INLET, BARKLEY SOUND, WEST COAST (UCLUELET) STAMP RIVER.
November 23rd, 2006
The area is into that time of year where weather plays a very important role. With high winds and heavy rainfall over the last 10 to 14 days saltwater fishing has been very slow. Not only has the poor weather played havoc with the saltwater fishing but it is that time of year when returning adult salmon have now returned to their natural spawning grounds. Freshwater steelhead fishing in the Somass-Stamp River system has been reasonably good even with the high water. More....

It is mid September and there are still lots of chinook, coho, chum and halibut in all areas. One big problem however over the last five days is to entice the salmon to bite. At this time of the season moving into the rivers is very important for conservation but a weather change should also get the salmon thinking about biting. ...more |
