SILVERS CHARTERS SALMON SPORT FISHING
DOUG LINDORES
AUGUST 10th, 2006

Sport fishing in the area for chinook, coho and halibut has been picking up daily.  Salmon and halibut fishing off of Ucluelet from the beach out to 28 miles has been very good for weeks.  The halibut fishing continues to be one of the best seasons ever.  Guides Mike, Al, and Helmut have been fishing from Wya Point, Little Beach, The Wreck, South Bank, and The Big Bank daily.  Results each day for salmon and halibut have been excellent.

The Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound has been picking up.  The sockeye in the Port Alberni Inlet and for that matter all of area 23 has been shut down.  Sport Fishermen have been fishing the Franklin boundary at Bells Bay daily to intercept some of the first chinook coming into the inlet.  Barkley Sound has been getting better as the first Robertson Creek Hatchery fish have entered the system.  The fish to begin the year have all been big.  Many fish have been over 25 pounds.  The biggest off of Wittlestone on a white glow hootchie and purple gold hotspot flasher.  This fish weighed in at 44lbs beating a 40 pounder caught at diplock last week.  Over the past weekend and the beginning of this week several fish in the 30 pound range were picked up at the Pill Point and Diplock area.  The best fishing however has been  at Meares, Austin, and Gilbraltor.  Guides Wayne, Doug and Brad had some excellent fishing at Meares with chinook all over 25 pounds. Guide Wayne had an excellent day on Monday the 7th of August with 7 chinook all over 20 pounds.

The best chinook and coho fishing is fast approaching.  Every day more fish will enter Barkley Sound and hold up in many areas.  These spots often include Pill Point, Diplock, Swale and Gilbraltor, Kirby Point, and the Bamfield Wall.

Salmon fishing in the Port Alberni Inlet should be very good by the 15th of August.  The fish will arrive and when they arrive they will be plentiful.  The first fish often school out at the Franklin marker then move into the China Creek, Underwood area, before holding up at some of the more popular harbour areas like Lone Tree Point, Pollys Point, and the Boy Scout Cabin.

Port Alberni Inlet

Sport Fishing in the inlet for sockeye has been entirely shut down by DFO.  Most anglers are fishing Bells Bay and The Narrows.  Chinook are showing up but not in big numbers yet.  Anglers for these early fish are using anchovie, white, green, and red or pink hootchies.  As the fish show up they will hold up at China Creek in the Underwood area and also Dunsmuir, Lone Tree, and the Harbour.  A large return of chinook and coho are expected.  DFO has announced that  the chinook will be larger in weight than the fish in the 2005 season.  The return is predicted to be as good as 2005.  If you are wishing to fish with a sport salmon fishing charter contact Doug at 250 724 2502 or 250 731 7389.

Barkley Sound

The Port Alberni areas best fishing to date has been Barkley Sound.  The fish have been out on the surfline in areas such as Meares, Wittlestone, Little Beale and Beale.  Swale Rock and Pill Point have had some nice fish also.  Guide Ross fished Pill everyday last week and picked up a total of 16 chinook with several at 30 pounds.  These are excellent results for the end of July and the beginning of August.

Guide Doug spent most days at Swale Gilbraltor and Meares, and Austin.  Pictured is Roy and Jane formerly of Saskatchewan who now reside in Nanaimo.  Both have never fished for Salmon and on Saturday had the opportunity to bring in their first ever chinook.  Roys fish weghed in when brought into the boat at 28 pounds and Janes fish was a whopping 33 pounds.  The fish played Jane out and she was helped by guide Doug and husband Roy. The fish were caught on an anchovie and coyote spoon at 80 feet.

Remember the Port Alberni Salmon Derby is getting close.   What a great way to finish the summer off.  Great prizes are offerred.  For more information contact Doug at dlindy@shaw.ca or call 250 724 2502.
