        WEST COAST  (UCLUELET) SOMASS-STAMP RIVER

February 20th, 2007

Millions of people from all over the world travel to Canada’s West Coast. The tiny communities of Tofino and Ucluelet located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island boasts well over one million visitors during the summer tourist season. Most visitors travel to B.C.’s most outer coast to admire breathtaking scenery, walk the white sands of the beach, hike many of the dense forests or various trails and mountains, and of course SPORT-FISH. Vancouver Islands West Coast has many unique fishing areas. The waters off of Tofino and Ucluelet are for those adventurous sport fishermen who enjoy offshore open-water sport fishing. The Port Alberni Inlet and scenic Barkley Sound are waters for those who enjoy calm protected ocean conditions. All of these areas provide prawns, crabs, and vast amounts of different salmon species.

Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing provides fishing charters in the Port Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound and the West Coast waters off of Ucluelet and Tofino. Port Alberni British Columbia has become known as the “Salmon Capital of the World”. The Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound provide some of the best salmon fishing in the world through the summer season (may to October). Large schools of sockeye chinook, coho and chum make their way to their spawning grounds swimming B.C.’s west coast waters then enter Barkley Sound and finally the Port Alberni Inlet before heading into the Somass-Stamp River System.

Salmon fishing in the Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, British Columbia area is fantastic. Anglers world-wide visit the area not only to sport fish but also take in much of the breath-taking scenery. One might ask “why do people come from other places to fish in the waters of this area”. Simply, Port Alberni provides easy access to all of the hot fishing spots in the area. The Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound provide almost 30 miles of calm protected water making it very accessible for sport fishermen, sport charters and guides to fish.

Visit Port Albern British Columbia this summer and take the opportunity to admire some wonderful scenery and relax on the wonderful waters of the Port Alberni Inlet or Barkley Sound salmon fishing. PORT ALBERNI THE SALMON CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.

CURRENT FISHING

UCLUELET

As we get closer to the end of February and early March we also get closer to the Herring spawn which will occur in Barkley Sound. This should help the winter chinook fishing along the beach even more over the next 3 to 4 weeks.

Ucluelet has had some great fishing days over the past few weeks. Mara Island close to Amphritite Point recorded a couple of 24 pound chinook during the week. Begg Island also had some nice fish. Guides have also been fishing into Sail Rock and Mayne Bay. Small winter chinook from 6 to 12 pounds have been in these two areas and have created lots of activity. Most of the winter chinook have been in 70 to 130 feet of water. Anchovy is still the most popular natural bait. Rhys Davis glow and purple haze teaser heads have been working very well. A number of hootchies are also working well. The best seem to be glow-white, white, purple haze, and army truck. Leader length from 42 to 52 inches behind a plaid, or purple haze flasher is excellent. Green flashers mid-day seem to be working well. Various spoons in coyotes, Titans, and Gypsies are doing well. Cop Car, watermelon, army-truck, silver, blue and green nickel have been excellent choices. Four inch spoons have had the most success.

Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing has started the annual SEAFOOD SAFARI. This is a great day on the water. We will take you prawn, crab, oyster, bottom and salmon fishing. Plan on a wonderful seafood platter the evening after your day of fishing. If you cannot take all of your catch home you could stay at one of the beautiful bed and breakfasts and use outdoor barbecues and other cooking facilities and have a wonderful feast over looking the beautiful Ucluelet Harbour.

This summer Slivers Charters is offering a salmon/halibut blaster special. We will take you salmon fishing in the Port Alberni Inlet or Barkley Sound for sockeye, chinook, and coho for one or two days and then take you and your guests halibut fishing in the open waters off of Ucluelet. We will arrange in this package all accommodations and fishing. Contact Doug at Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing for this excellent summer opportunity.

BARKLEY SOUND

Barkley Sound weather and fishing has been unbelievable over the last few days. Weather conditions on some daysDawn of Manhattan show of her first ever chinook caught in Barkley Sound in September 2006. fish like these will be the norm this year. Dawn fished with husband Mike and was guided by Doug Lindores of Slivers Charters have been beautiful and warm. The winter chinook fishing has also been very good as guides have had some excellent fishing in the Vernon Bay and Swale Rock area. The biggest fish of the week was a beautiful 23 and a half pound winter chinook caught on a 4 inch green-nickel coyote spoon. One group this past week brought home their limit of 8 salmon. All of the fish kept were over 10 pounds. There were many catch and release fish in the 6 to 7 pound range. Coyote spoons and hootchies trolled from 90 to 130 feet seem to be working well. Purple Haze and Army Truck hootchies are a good choice behind green, plaid, and purple haze flashers.

Sarita Bay, Samatao Bay, and Pill Point have had plenty of smaller feeder chinook. The fish in Sarita and Samatao have been in 50 to 70 feet of water. The white AORl12 hootchie which again is white and has done well as have small 3.5 and 4 inch silver spoons.

The winter chinook fishing will get better as the herring spawn closes in. Slivers Charters is expecting some great winter and early spring fishing.

We are preparing for a great year in Barkley Sound. We have access to a lodge in Port Alberni for accommodation where guests might enjoy leaving for day trips. Those more adventurous and who would enjoy staying in Bamfield we also have lodge accommodation. Late June and July are days when migrating chinook and coho come into the sound and feed on the ample amounts of bait. Of course by early August Robertson Creek Hatchery fish begin to move into Barkley Sound beginning their final journey to the Port Alberni Inlet and finally to the Somass-Stamp River system. The 2007 season should be the year of some big chinook. The prediction or early forecast is for a high number of 4, 5, and 6 year olds. Coho are looking very good on the coast also as are returns to the Port Alberni area hatchery. Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing is now booking summer trips for Barkley Sound. Now is the time to do this. SOMASS-STAMP RIVER

Steelhead fishing has been slower over the past 9 or 10 days. Some fishermen who have no experience on the river have hooked into only one or two fish per day. Guides have been producing on average 6 steelhead per day, which is a far cry from the 15 or 16 just a month ago. New fish are entering the system daily but there are more wild fish than hatchery. The steelhead are now in the upper and lower river. The lower seems to be better but can be very busy especially on weekends. Remember the bait ban above “the bucket”. Anglers not using bait or have none available are doing alright on large Pink Worms and various spin and glows. Using bait on the lower is the place to go during the weekdays. Steelhead fishing should pickup at the beginning of the week due to the great amount of rain on Saturday and early Sunday. The river was getting low. Those wanting to walk or have not any access to a jet boat should come in at the gun club. We are expecting the steelhead fishing to improve and we are continuing to fish until the end of March.

PORT ALBERNI INLET

The Port Alberni Inlet is currently very quiet. Sockeye salmon begin swimming the water in May and as the river begins toThe Lalonde family from Fort McMurray fished with guide Doug Lindores of Slivers Charters in August 2006 and picked up these chinook in the Port Alberni Inlet. Fishing for chinook in 2007 in the inlet should be spectacular warm the sockeye begin to school up in the inlet. Usually when the river hits 18 degrees Celsius the sockeye slow down entering the Somass. The schooling begins in big numbers usually by mid June which usually begins the sockeye season for anglers world-wide. The sockeye season often continues into August with Chinook often showing up by August 10 and then in late August coho enter the inlet. The Port Alberni Inlet most years has 4 very good months of fishing. Many guides are busy all 4 months with the many individuals that visit the area who wish an opportunity to fish the Port Alberni Inlet.

Please remember that the Port Alberni Salmon Derby is on the Labor Day Weekend. Make your plans now to enjoy the festivities.
