October 24th, 2006

The fall weather on Vancouver Island has continued to be spectacular.  Except for some rain on Wednesday and early Thursday morning of last week the weather has been spectacular in the Port Alberni and Ucluelet area.  The Port Alberni Inlet and Barclay Sound waters have been absolutely spectacular for sport fishermen and also for those sport prawning.  There has also been some exceptionally good days off the west coast of Vancouver Island (Ucluelet).  The Somass-Stamp River is rather low at this time of year but did come up with last weeks rain which improved the river fishing for steelhead and coho.

Port Alberni Inlet and Barclay Sound

The waters of the Port Alberni Inlet and Barclay Sound have been absolutely flat for days on end.  There are large numbers of coho in the waters of Mctush and Nahmint.  The problem is they are not biting.   Slivers Charters Guides John and Brad have said that  anglers should be in the area at dawn and sunset.  Due to boat travel time from the Port Alberni marinas only those camping at the Mctush campsite and China Creek are there in time for any type of bite.  There are also big schools of chum salmon in these two areas and also in Cous Creek.   Sport fishermen targeting chum (which are wonderful when hot smoked) are using mp 15 and 16 hootchies with a 35 to 42 inch tail.  Purple Octopus and white-purple octopus hootchies are also working very well.

Barclay Sound has reports of some late northern coho at Kirby and Sanford and also Whittlestone.  Guide Mark had two 12 pound coho and three twenty pound chum between Poet Nook and Bamfield last Wednesday.

Unfortunately it is getting late in the year and with any heavy rain the remaining salmon in the area will head into the various rivers and creeks.

Ucluelet 34 pound chinook caught at the Wreck off of Ucluelet in mid October with guide Mike Marriott and guest John Lewy from Edmonton.

The halibut, feeder spring, and ling cod fishing on the west coast (Ucluelet) is still excellent.  Halibut are found at the Wreck and off of the Big Bank. Halibut have also been taken at four miles of the beach.  Salmon parts on the jig are still working best.  On Sunday guide Mike picked up three 20 pound halibut and four lingcod and several rock fish with his clients.  The group did not fish for salmon but others who did were picking up some beautiful silver feeder spring from 10 to 16 pounds.  The feeders are 80 to 110 feet down and are hitting anchovie, purple haze and white hootchies.  It seems that it should  continue to be good fishing especially for halibut and feeder springs for the next few weeks.  It is important to watch the weather to make sure it is a fishable day.  There have been a good number of very fishable days in October.  For more information call Doug of Slivers Charters at 250 724 2502 or e mail dlindy@shaw.ca

 Somass-Stamp River

The next two weeks should be the best summer-fall steelhead fly-fishing of the summer-fall steelhead season.  The problem guides are having is low water.  The water is low and the fish are not that anxious to bite as the water has been very clear.  Anglers have been picking up some nice jack coho.   After the mid-week rainfall guides had much better success over the weekend.  Heavy rain is again forecast for mid-week which should greatly improve the fishing.  Guides are entering the water at the Robertson Creek Hatchery and are finding most of their success in the upper river.
